A FUTURE WITHOUT PLASTIC FOR THE WATERS OF THE PLANET

Plastic Free Waters is the program launched in 2019 by some members of the IYFR Rotary Fellowship, the International Group of Rotarians passionate about sailing, a program that continues today carried out in Rotary and in the world by the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians itself.

ACTIVITY

Stop, before it ends up in the oceans, the enormous flow of plastic transported by the great Asian and African rivers, which constitutes 80% of the plastic that ends up in the sea. This can be achieved through adequate and reliable river barriers, which intercept plastic before it reaches the sea. With our experts, we aim to evaluate and support the design, testing, implementation and commissioning of barriers or other systems.
The search for alternative materials or rapidly biodegradable plastics, as well as new valid recycling solutions, are aspects that will become increasingly important. Our team of technicians constantly follows the different initiatives, to help guide them towards concrete solutions at an industrial level.
Working for a significant decrease in the amount of plastic produced in the world, to avoid the uncontrolled increase in the production and accumulation of plastic waste in the environment.

It is the only definitive solution that will bring less waste to the oceans. It will take some time, both because the enormous interests of oil tankers, producers and large users are at stake, and because many developing countries lack the economic and organizational means to prevent or cure the problem.
Information, Awareness, Training, which we carry out with campaigns and tools directed from primary schools. They are an effective tool, albeit over time, to spread knowledge of the problem and create responsible awareness, leading to the rejection of the exaggeration and uselessness of much of plastic.

VISION

We hope to achieve a world where the use of plastic products is conscious, that there is no plastic garbage left in the environment, and that plastic waste does not reach lakes, rivers and seas. A world where plastic waste is collected and, if possible, properly recycled.

MISSION

Raise awareness in our communities about the danger and damage to our planet that the incorrect use and disposal of plastic objects has been causing. Significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste entering canals, rivers and seas. Create procedures and activities to treat and recycle plastic trash recovered from waters. Use the knowledge of Rotarians and partner institutions to develop, evaluate and promote technical solutions. Promote studies and search for reasonable ways and systems that can recover, treat and recycle the plastic garbage concentrated in the seas and oceans.
